In 1820 a small log house with a dirt floor, board roof and openings for door and windows was built by William Barnett on his place on Old Town Branch (about 4 miles North).

 

In 1822 a log building complete with floor, door and window shutters was built to serve as the courthouse and jail. Constructed on a site in the new founded Town of Waynesboro.  

 

In 1827 in the same vicinity a new two-story 24x34 feet frame building was built. All lumber used in it was manufactured on the public square by means of the old time "whip saw". The cost of erecting this building was $ 800.  

 

In 1844 and the same vicinity a new courthouse 26x46 feet a two story brick was built. The upper room was used for court. The lower was offices for County Court Clerk, Circuit Court Clerk, Clerk and Master and Register. No other Officers etc. were provided for. This building cost $ 4000.  

 

In 1904 in the same area (center of the town square) a structure of poured stone was built at a cost of $ 25,000. (Burned January 1972).  

 

In 1973 a new building was built at a cost of about $900,000. This is the present Courthouse and 5th Wayne County Courthouse built on the Waynesboro Square in one hundred fifty one years.
